| L&T To Build Delhi's
Longest Flyover L&T has been entrusted with the task of constructing the longest flyover in New Delhi. The foundation stone for this was laid by the Union Defence Minister, Mr. George Fernandes, October 11, 2002, in the presence of the Union Minister for Urban Development, Mr. Ananth Kumar; the Union Labour Minister, Dr. Sahib Singh Verma, and several other dignitaries. This four-lane 2147-m long grade separator will connect the city of Delhi to Dwarka, a new suburban town developed by Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for a population of 11 lakh. The scope of this Rs. 53.76-crore-contract consists of construction of the flyover, junction improvement, construction of service road and complete drainage system including electrification. L&T-Ramboll Consulting Engineers will provide the design features of the flyover. ECC, L&T's Construction Division, will execute the turnkey project in 30 months. The technology employed for the construction of the flyover will ensure minimal disturbance to the existing traffic. The aesthetic fish belly-shaped flyover deck will be supported on 75 single piers, which will enable traffic flow right under the flyover. The foundation will consist of one-metre-dia bored cast-in-situ piles. The approach ramps will be located at Dwarka Dwar (122.4m long) and Cantonment area (40m long) in South Delhi. Further, for lateral approach/descent, the flyover will have three merging ramps. The flyover will follow the contour of Palam Road, one of the Capital's major thoroughfares. Palam Road serves as an important link that connects Dwarka with South Delhi. The existing road-rail level crossing at the entrance to Dwarka remains closed for significant periods of time, causing traffic snarls and losses in terms of delay and fuel cost. The average waiting period at the level crossing is in the range of 5 to 40 minutes. "This order for Delhi's longest flyover reaffirms L&T's position as a construction company known for its ability to build quality projects in time by employing the latest technology," said Mr. A. Ramakrishna, L&T's Deputy Managing Director. ******************************* L&T To Construct Longest Cross-national Belt Conveyor L&T has signed a contract valued at US $23million, with Lafarge Surma Cement (LSC) Ltd., Bangladesh, for construction of a 17-km long cross-national belt conveyor. It will convey limestone and shale from the mines in the hilly terrain of Shella Bazar, Meghalaya, to the marshy plains of Chhatak, Bangladesh, where Lafarge is putting up a cement plant. This is the longest belt conveyor to be constructed in India and is to be executed in 24 months by ECC Division. Mr. K. G. Hariharan, Executive Vice-President (Indl. & Elec. Projects and Utilities), L&T-ECC, signed the contract on behalf of L&T on September 25, 2002 in the presence of a large gathering of dignitaries such as the Indian High Commissioner, Mr. Monilal Tripathy, the French Ambassador in Bangladesh, Mr. Michel Lummaux, the Bangladesh Minister for Commerce, Mr. A. K. Mahmud Chowdhury, Chairman-Islam Group & LSC Director, Mr. Monzurul Islam, and LSC's Managing Director, Mr. Yong Ngai Chan. The scope of the turnkey project undertaken in association with AUMUND of France includes design, engineering, supply, construction, erection, testing and commissioning of the conveying system. The conveyor will follow the ground contour along its entire route and will have horizontal as well as vertical curves. Two self-propelled vehicles for maintenance will move over the conveyor gallery. This will be closed to avoid outside disturbances. Location of the construction site near Cherapunji, which has the world's highest rainfall, will be yet another challenge to project execution. Mr. A. Ramakrishna, Dy. Managing Director, L&T, reiterated, "On completion, this project will serve as a global benchmark for construction of cross-national conveyor systems in terms of length, location and logistic challenges -- spanning hills, plains, marshland, rivers, canals and roads." **************** L&T Goes Live On mySAP Strategic Enterprise Management Larsen & Toubro Limited, Electrical and Electronics Division (L&T-EBG) is the first company in India to announce the successful 'Go-live' of their mySAP Strategic Enterprise Management (mySAP SEM) implementation. This initiative is a significant step towards strengthening the company's business intelligence and value-based management. Business Information Warehouse (mySAP BW) too has gone live together with mySAP-SEM. mySAP BW serves as the cornerstone of business performance management and analytical application. This also forms a platform/central hub for implementing various other components of mySAP.com. SEM is installed on top of BW, which is fed by data from ERP (SAP R/3) and other information systems. mySAP SEM is a suite of applications to address business intelligence needs, covering areas like corporate performance monitoring (CPM) and strategic management through key performance indicators (KPIs), business planning, etc. This implementation would not only enable the strategic plans to percolate down the line through deployment of 'Balanced Scorecard' (BSC) but also help the management to monitor the performance at all levels through the 'Management Cockpit'. The 'Management Cockpit' has four walls with each wall focusing on different business perspectives. A wall has up to six 'Logical View' elements with each View consisting up to six Frames. A Frame serves to visualise individual KPIs using various types of graphics. The 'Balanced Scorecard' comprises Objectives, Measures and Initiatives organised in four perspectives, viz: Financial, Customer, Internal Business Process and Learning & Growth perspective as per 'Kaplan & Norton Model'. Both these solutions are web enabled to provide key information to top management. Larsen & Toubro Infotech Limited was the implementation partner for the mySAP SEM & mySAP BW solution. Mr. R. N. Mukhija, Member of the Board and Sr. Vice President (Operations) of L&T, said, "L&T has always been a quick adapter of fast changing, globally available technology which helps our business processes to improve. Like, on this occasion, we have often been the first to implement the latest technology." "With the 'Management Cockpit', key performance indicators (KPIs) would be easily presented and better analyzed. The performance monitoring methodology at L&T-EBG consists of an optimal blend of 'Balanced Scorecard', value based management and policy deployment technique (X-Matrix)." http://www.larsentoubro.com/fin.htm |
